We Came, We Saw, We Drank Chocolate

Over Jess' Christmas break from college, we visited family in Oregon for a belated Christmas. On our second day, we went to Portland with his sister and brother-in-law and finally did some proper tourist nonsense that we hadn't managed to do on previous trips. We may not have quite conquered Portland, but gosh darn it, we certainly drank chocolate.

Only in Oregon can you find Blueberry Basil Bourbon and Carrot Cake donuts.
After a healthy breakfast at Blue Star Donuts, we headed down the street to Cacao Drinkable Chocolate. (Hey, I was on vacation. Fitness resolutions don't count.) I'm a self-confessed chocolate snob. Life is too short for poor quality chocolate and this did not disappoint. They sell it in "shots" because it's so rich. Jess thought it was a bit bitter, but so am I and he's never complained.

We headed on over to Powell's bookstore, which happens to be the largest new and used bookstore in the world, occupying a whole city block! They have more than ONE MILLION books. I know what you're thinking, what if they don't have your book? That's okay. You can print it on site.  Just head on up to the Espresso Book Machine (they're pretty big on coffee in Oregon), and print it out yourself.

On our way back to the car, all the while taking pictures of cool buildings like true tourists, we spotted a horse hitched at the curb. Unfortunately for Jess' childhood dreams of being a cowboy, it was a bit small for him to ride.

I'm not sure why they have advertisements for keeping Portland weird, it's clearly doing very well with that on its own.
